You can easily test a tiny piece for hardness and solubility in dilute acid; the results should distinguish unambiguously between calcite and quartz.

With care, the brittle quartz can be partly chipped away to expose a nice "matrix specimen." Such specimens are more interesting and valuable than crystals that have been totally detached from the host rock.
