The Barrens used to be known as the State Line Mining district due to the Chromium mining that took place at various sites, mainly in the 19th century. The sun-baked conditions on bare serpentine rock and gravel create desert-like habitat for rare and unusual plant species that are specially adapted to withstand heat and drought.

In the small town of Nottingham PA, there exists a unique park that offers visitors a chance to visit a rare ecosystem found only in this region: Nottingham Serpentine Barrens Park. Rich in history and ecology, this Chester County attraction rests within a series of barrens that straddle the boundaries of Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Eight miles of hiking and biking trails cut through the barrens, and there is a quarter-mile-long interpretive nature trail as well. The remains of early quarrying and mining sites can also be found. The serpentine barrens, which covers more than half of the 651-acre park, is well-divided from the developed, recreational portions of Nottingham.

Tyson was among the first to make the connection between the occurrence of chromite and serpentine barrens, areas of sparse vegetation on metal-rich and inhospitable serpentine deposits.
