My plan was that if it didn't work well for Z I cold always just treat is as power fed and do the quill. It has worked great, and I really like having the quill free for delicate drilling jobs.

The old Bridgeport catalog I have shows ball screws as an option for the machine but makes no mention of any CNC features. Thats why I figured I could use them on a manual mill. As for the bronze nuts, the split nuts are a better design as when snugged up they engage evenly around the screw.
