India has emerged as the third largest coal producer in the world after China and USA with a 9% share of the total global coal production. While the coal production from underground mining in countries like China, USA and Australia are about 95, 33 and 20% respectively, India produces only about 15% of coal from underground mines (Prasad 2009).

CASE STUDY REGIONS The case study region selected is Tandsi Mine of the Kanhan Area in Western Coalfields Limited – a subsidiary of Coal India Limited. The trend of fatal accidents occurring in Indian underground coal mines is higher than in the USA's and Western Australia's underground coal mines, as shown in Fig. 1 (DGMS, 2017; Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, 2018; MSHA, 2017). The different fatality rates from 2002 to 2017 are represented in Fig. 2.

Thus, of the 86 accidents reported in the coal industry of Kuzbass in the last 5 years, 82 have occurred in the mines, and 42% were caused by underground fires. Statistics on accidents show that up to 70% of exogenous fires in underground coal mines occur in the excavations equipped with belt conveyors because of the fire of conveyor belts.

Although the real HRR curve from a mine fire is important in simulating the fire accurately, the HRR curves for different mine fires may not be available in practice. For the users of the MFIRE program, it is desirable to have typical HRR curves for commonly used combustible materials in underground mines such as coal, wood, and conveyor belt.
